The KIT basketball team narrowly missed out on a place in the final round of the German University Championships in Würzburg. Despite a strong performance, they lost to TU Dresden in the semi-finals and had to return home to the fan-shaped city without winning the title they had hoped for.
The team from Karlsruhe pulled off a small surprise in the very first game. In the rematch of last year's final against hosts Würzburg, the KIT basketball team started the tournament with a convincing performance and held their nerve in the final minutes of a narrow 46:44 victory, inflicting a heavy defeat on the defending champions.
The second game was against the University of Tübingen, who had also beaten Würzburg to open the tournament. It was a close game, with the Karlsruhe team holding a narrow lead for most of the time. The game remained exciting until the final phase, with the lead changing hands several times before a narrow 43:41 victory was celebrated.
The semi-final was then against TU Dresden. Dresden, which had four ProA players, was regarded as the favorite from the outset. However, Karlsruhe was unimpressed by Dresden's line-up and played a thrilling game at eye level with the favorites. The KIT basketball team was in the lead until shortly before the end of the game, before Karlsruhe lost its accuracy in offense. Dresden maintained its rhythm and decided the game 36:41 in its favor. The Dresden team also managed this in the final against Cologne and were crowned the new 2023 DHM champions.
