  • On February 8, the German University Athletics Championships took place in the Glaspalast Sindelfingen. As in previous years, KIT was represented by a large delegation and was able to celebrate considerable successes.

The competition day began with the men's 60-meter preliminary heats. Four KIT athletes competed. Philipp Ippen qualified for the B final in 7.12 seconds, while Colin Schiller (7.23 seconds), Julian Bowe (7.29 seconds) and 400-meter specialist Timo Müller (7.49 seconds) narrowly missed out on the finals. In the B final, Ippen improved to a strong 6.99 seconds and broke the magic seven-second barrier for the first time - which earned him victory in the final.

The KIT was also strongly represented in the 200-meter indoor lap. Tilman Duhme started the competition with 25.50 seconds. Julian Bowe (23.36 seconds) and Colin Schiller (22.65 seconds) used the already completed 60 meters as perfect preparation and both achieved season's best performances. Philipp Ippen went one better and sprinted to the finish with a personal best of 22.42 seconds.

Four KIT athletes also competed in the women's 60 meters: Julia Vorrath (8.89 seconds), Johanna Ossmann, Charlotte Kiesner (both 8.29 seconds) and Kiri Fee Bürkle (8.34 seconds) showed solid performances, but missed out on the finals. Charlotte Kiesner also proved herself in the 200 meters, finishing tenth in 26.20 seconds. Kiri Fee Bürkle competed in the long jump and achieved a distance of 4.58 meters.

The KIT also showed strong performances in the women's 400 meters: Annika Kochert (59.58 seconds) and Fabienne Berg (59.99 seconds) both stayed under the prestigious 60-second mark.

The hurdle sprinters Marie Streichsbier (9.18 seconds) and Sharleen Klein (8.80 seconds) made it into the finals. Sharleen Klein secured sixth place in the A final, while Marie Streichsbier improved her time again in the B final.

Alexander Kessler won the first medal for the KIT in the 800 meters. In a thrilling final sprint, he secured bronze and was only four tenths behind the winner from Leipzig.

The KIT athletes were particularly dominant in the long jump. Only a jumper from Worms prevented a triple victory for Karlsruhe. Niklas Ludwig won gold with 7.35 meters, while Julian Bowe secured silver with a jump of 6.74 meters in his last attempt. Steffen Klinder completed the strong team result with fourth place and a season's best (6.45m).

The KIT was also able to shine in the pole vault: Arne Dümmler achieved fifth place with a season's best of 4.85 meters, even leaving decathlon world champion Niklas Kaul (4.75 meters) behind.

The crowning finale of the competition day was the men's 4x200 meter relay. Philipp Ippen, Colin Schiller, Robert Lahmann and Joel Tutzschky fought a close race with the relay team from Erlangen-Nuremberg and took a strong second place in 1:29.26 minutes.

With numerous best performances, medals and strong placings, the KIT once again underlined its class in German university sport. The results give hope for a successful outdoor season in which the Karlsruhe athletes want to continue to attack.
