On Tuesday, November 19, 2024, WG Karlsruhe competed in Hall 2 here on campus for a place in the Final 4 of the German University Championship. The guests were WG Stuttgart, WG Munich and WG Freiburg, who wanted to try to win the ticket themselves.
After a short draw, the first round matches were played: Stuttgart against Karlsruhe and Munich against Freiburg. This led directly to the eagerly awaited derby between the Baden and Württemberg teams. However, the latter had to realize relatively quickly that they were no match for the power of Karlsruhe after the home team consisting of Marlene Samman, Taqiya Ikhwan, Ronja Latz, Fabian Schlenga and Mathis Alt won all their games and the match ended 5:0.
The Karlsruhe team continued against the WG from Freiburg. The women's matches were particularly close there. Marlene and Taqiya first played a good doubles match, but unfortunately lost the game by a narrow margin before Ronja then played a thriller in the singles. A neck-and-neck race, which Freiburg's Lina Berger from the 2nd Bundesliga was able to secure in the end with a 2-point difference in both sets. Fabian and Mathis nevertheless managed to keep a cool head and were able to win their matches confidently, meaning that another victory was recorded here too.
The final between the two previously unbeaten teams from Munich and Karlsruhe took place at around 18:30. The Munich team had also come to Karlsruhe with 2nd division experience on the women's side and initially won the women's doubles and women's singles. Former German university champion Fabian then managed to score the next point in the doubles with Mathis before equalizing in the singles. Now it came down to Mathis and Ronja's mixed match. The first set went into extra time, but despite the first signs of fatigue, the Karlsruhe team had their nerves under control and took the set 24:22. The Munich team were now a little more impatient, which Ronja and Mathis took advantage of to score easy points and ultimately win the match in two sets.
So it's clear: after a year's absence, Karlsruhe is back in the Final4 of the DHM 2025!
