  • Datum: 04.07.2024
  • This year's university team fencing championships took place in Heidelberg on June 22 and 23.

Saturday started with the men's epee competition. Karlsruhe was represented here by two teams. Team Karlsruhe 1, consisting of Simon Bender, Leo Zippelius and Peter Berger, was able to secure a victory in the preliminary round against a strong field of participants. After a victory against Mainz in the first knockout match, the Karlsruhe team was unfortunately unable to prevail in the round of 16 against Darmstadt, who later came third, and ended up in 16th place. Team Karlsruhe 2, consisting of Franz Schweizer, András Pásztor and Max Berger, started the tournament with two victories. The epee fencers were also able to clearly beat the competition in the knockout round. The Karlsruhe team then faced the fencers from Heidelberg in the knockout round of 8. The extremely strong team from Heidelberg lived up to its role as favorites, won this duel and later secured the title in the final. A strong eighth place was achieved.

Matthias Wolsfeld, Elias Ott and Simon Bender competed for Karlsruhe in the men's foil competition on Sunday. After a mixed preliminary round, they had an arduous journey ahead of them. After the team was able to win clearly in the round of 16, the next match was with Mainz against familiar faces from the preliminary round. While the team from Karlsruhe had to admit defeat in the preliminary round, they were able to secure their place in the quarter-finals after a long and tough battle. Driven by their success, the three foil fencers were able to clearly prevail here. In the semi-finals, they were defeated by the eventual university champions from Aachen. In the end, they finished in third place.

For the fencing department of Karlsruhe University Sports, the weekend with a medal in the team was a successful representation. The department management would like to thank everyone who made this weekend possible.
