DHM Golf 2012

DHM Golf 2012

At the Kiawah Golf Club Landgut Hof Hayna Riedstadt e.V. the golfing part of the student population meets for the annual DHM. Delegations from Bremen, Giessen, Munich, Freiburg and many other universities were again at the start. Each university usually provides a team. The Karlsruhe university golfers started this time with four teams of 4 players each. The University of Karlsruhe dominated the starting list and also the performances.
On a Thursday evening in a bar in the Karlsruhe city center, it started. The chairman (Jonas Schaper) welcomed all golfers who came to the regulars' table in a white hoodie with the big inscription "KIT Hochschulgolf". This became the starting signal for the huge participation in this tournament. The Stammtisch suddenly consisted of over twenty golfers in the summer semester of 2012. The list of polo and sweater orders was soon full and the starting spots for the DHM were also quickly sold out. The board discussed and decided to provide more funding to allow for four team scores this year. Consequently, the Karlsruhe golf team started with a record number of 16 individual entries and 4 team entries, 14 players from KIT and two from the university.
On Friday the 25.05.2012 it went off. Practice round on the Kiawah Golf course, still familiar from last year. The sun burns down mercilessly on the players, it is almost windless. The seniors in the flight behind are sweating and waiting, the senior couple in front is strolling, sweating, cooing and waiting, in between students. In the sweat of his brow, a player assures us that he can no longer play here on hole 15 and that he no longer wants to. - He is a gymnast and ski instructor, he should actually be fit. - The planet burns mercilessly on the tormented students until finally hole 18 comes into view. Redemption is approaching! By now it's 5 p.m., the senior flight in the back is pleased to see that the boys are also having trouble with the weather. The boys are not rejoicing, but a few have to go to the Captains meeting. 6 p.m.: Four people are standing by to be instructed by the DGV referees. But without further ado the meeting is cancelled, all questions had already been clarified in advance. Consequently, the trip to the accommodation in Leeheim was on the agenda. When the departure to Darmstadt for a round of burgers is scheduled, the sky already foreshadows that there will not be much sunshine the next day. KSC plays 1:1 in Regensburg and can hope to keep the league until the second leg in Karlsruhe. Hope for the KSC and the next day accompanies the players to bed.
Saturday, 26.05.2012. First tee time 8:00 and no rain! No rain, but wind. Lots of wind, good wind, headwind. One or the other sailor would have been pleased, with four wind forces sailing is fun, golfing is not! The day remains a test of maturity for each of the golfers. The course is played by white and has a perceived 8,000 meters on this day. In reality, it is only 6.3 km that want to be golfer. Suddenly you can't address par four holes with the second shot! And that means a lot, because the main starting field has handicaps between +2 and -6. A very high-class tournament as some soberingly noted. At the end of the day it was clear how badly it was really played. A couple of 71s were the best rounds possible. Team one from KIT led the field. Team two was in third place.
Then in the early evening, the squad set off for the general Players Night. The Players Night was dominated by soccer players. Bayern Munich versus BVB was projected on the canteen wall. Eating and playing were the order of the day, but with Bayern's 5:2 defeat, the whole company collapsed and left for their accommodations.
Sunday, 27.05.2012. final day, 8:00 first start time. Today starts from tee 1 and tee 10. No rain, few clouds and no wind yet. That came up only with time, but fortunately only with wind force 2. The results were better today than the day before. But worth telling on this day is the scorecard of Fabian Haug. Start at tee 10, birdie, birdie, chip-in for eagle. Then a birdie and another bogey on his first nine holes. The second nine are comparatively boring, but show consistently good golf. Seven pars and two birdies made the score of six under par. Course record set and less than 30 minutes after the scorecard was handed in, the two favorites for the individual title of German University Champion are sent into a play-off on hole 9. The nine, a relatively short par four, a dogleg to the right is played by Haug with a smooth shot to the fairway. Benedict Gebhardt, the defending champion, is already left in the rough. With a laborious shot he saves himself left below the flag into the semirough, but he ball is deep in the grass. Haug hits solidly on the green and can now wait. Gebhardt hits, a heavy shot! Too much spin, played too short and his third shot is just on the green. He doesn't hole the following 4 meter putt. Haug has not yet putted and it is already clear to many who has won. Fabian Haug can still three putts to share, two to win. "Haug can't even three-putt!" says his flight partner today with a smile on his face. And he is right.
First place in the team ranking goes to Team Karlsruhe 1, ahead of Bremen and Darmstadt. Fourth place goes to Team Karlsruhe 2. The 3rd team finishes eleventh and the 4th team fourteenth. The individual rankings go to Fabian Haug, KIT (138 strokes) in the men's competition and to Katharina Dorsheimer, Frankfurt (157 strokes) in the women's competition.
