From 12 to 24 July 2024, the European University Games 2024 will take place in Debrecen and Miskolc (Hungary), which, according to the organizers, is the largest academic multi-sport event in Europe with a total of around 5000 athletes from over 40 countries. As at the EUG 2022, our competition team from Karlsruhe once again qualified for the EUG in Hungary in various team and individual sports. These include Beach handball (women + men), soccer (women + men), taekwondo and volleyball (men).

In the placement round, the beach ladies once again showed all their skills and celebrated 5th place with two victories against Uni Eger (Hungary) and WG Köln (both won 2:0). With Ariane Roth they also had the best scorer of the tournament (68 points). The beach men put in another strong performance in the placement matches against Özyeğin University (Turkey), winning 2:1, but then lost 2:0 to Budapest University (Hungary) in the match for fifth place, finishing in sixth place. zum Beitrag | Link (adh)For Kaize Zhou, the EUG in taekwondo was over after the quarter-finals. He lost 1-0 to his opponent from Portugal. The day was also less successful for the men's and women's beach handball teams. The women lost their last preliminary round match against WG Köln 2:1 in a shoot-out and will therefore play the placement round for places 5 to 7. The men also lost their last preliminary round match against Uni Zagreb (Croatia) 0:2 and then had no chance in the quarter-finals against the tournament favorites Uni Malaga (Spain) 0:2. zum Beitrag | Link (adh)Jessica Wolf started the competition 2:0 in round 1 against a fighter from Great Britain, but was then beaten 2:0 by the Portuguese player in the quarter-finals. There was also strong competition in the women's beach handball tournament. Here, our women had to settle for two defeats against the University of Budapest (Hungary) and the University of Zagreb (Croatia). The men's beach handball team was able to redeem itself after the opening defeat against the University of Budapest (Hungary) with a win against the University of Kütahya (Turkey) and kept its chance of reaching the quarter-finals. zum Beitrag | Link (adh)At the end of the tournament, the women's and men's teams had to play for 5th and 3rd place. It was an up and down game for the women's soccer team against Uni Uman (Ukraine). After trailing 0:3 at the break, they came back to 2:3, but were ultimately beaten 3:4. In the end, they finished in 6th place (out of 9 teams). Unfortunately, the men's soccer team missed out on a medal in the bronze medal match. In the penalty shoot-out, they lost by a wafer-thin margin to the University of Debrecen (Hungary). zum Beitrag | Link (adh)By the 5th place match, the volleyball team had run out of steam and finished the tournament in 6th place (out of 12 teams) after losing 3:0 to the University of Lyon (France). The men's soccer team also suffered a painful defeat. In the semi-final against the University of Würzburg, they were clearly defeated 4:1. Only the women's soccer team had something to celebrate on this day. With a hard-fought 2:1 victory against the University of Trondheim (Norway), they will now play for 5th place. zum Beitrag | Link (adh)The volleyball team kicked off a successful day at the EUG with a 3:1 victory against the University of Maribor (Slovenia) and will now compete in the decisive match for 5th place. The women's soccer team continued with a 2:1 win against the University of Coimbra (Portugal) in their final group match. The final match was played by the men's soccer team, who fought their way through the quarter-finals with a hard-earned 1:0 victory against the University of Granada (Spain), thus securing their place in the German semi-finals against the University of Würzburg. Although our volleyball team had qualified for the quarter-finals as group winners, the Czechs put in a consistently strong performance throughout the match. The women's team showed patience against deep-lying opponents and earned their well-deserved reward. The men from KIT also won 2:0 against the University of Bergen (Norway) and marched through the group unbeaten and without losing any points. The men's volleyball team did not play today. The festive opening ceremony in the DVTK Arena in Miskolc brought a sparkle to the eyes of the participants from the German universities, who had already set sporting highlights. Around 4,800 athletes from all over Europe are taking part in this year's EUG. A total of 393 German athletes from 59 universities will be competing for medals in Hungary over the next twelve days. The men's soccer team secured their first three points with a 3:1 win against the University of Salzburg, while the women's soccer team started the tournament with a 1:5 defeat against the French University of Valenciennes.
