From 12 to 24 July 2024, the European University Games 2024 will take place in Debrecen and Miskolc (Hungary), which, according to the organizers, is the largest academic multi-sport event in Europe with a total of around 5000 athletes from over 40 countries. As at the EUG 2022, our competition team from Karlsruhe once again qualified for the EUG in Hungary in various team and individual sports. These include Beach handball (women + men), soccer (women + men), taekwondo and volleyball (men).

At the EUG 2024 from July 12 to 24 in Debrecen and Miskolc (Hungary) with a total of 4,513 athletes, the 76 athletes and officials of the WG Karlsruhe showed impressive performances on and off the field and gained many positive experiences and impressions. Unfortunately, in contrast to past European Championships, there were also negative incidents, in particular incidents of nationalism and homophobia, which are not compatible with the values of sport and the values of KIT university sport and which we do not want to leave uncommented.

In addition to the sporting competitions, it was exciting not only to gain an insight into their own sport at an international level, but also into other sports. In sporting terms, the team from Karlsruhe finished the tournament in 6th place, which was ultimately unsatisfactory, but not undeserved. Due to the limited preparation time together, the team got used to each game and performed better from day to day.

For the tournament, the team made the long journey to the city of Miskolc in eastern Hungary, where the competition took place with 12 teams from all over Europe. Over the three days of the tournament, both the men's and women's teams will compete against 7 other European university teams, including some top-class players. alle InfosJessica Wolf and Kaize Zhou will represent KIT at this year's European Universities Games (EUG) in the sport of taekwondo, which will take place from July 19 to 24 in Miskolc, Hungary. Jessica is competing in the women's -57 kg category and Kaize in the men's -58 kg category. Both fighters qualified for the European Championships with very successful results at the DHM 2023 and 2024. Many European fighters who have already enjoyed international success are expected to take part.

With Ariane Roth they also had the best scorer of the tournament (68 points). The beach men put in another strong performance in the placement matches against Özyeğin University (Turkey), winning 2:1, but then lost 2:0 to Budapest University (Hungary) in the match for fifth place, finishing in sixth place. The day was also less successful for the men's and women's beach handball teams. The women lost their last preliminary round match against WG Köln 2:1 in a shoot-out and will therefore play the placement round for places 5 to 7. The men also lost their last preliminary round match against Uni Zagreb (Croatia) 0:2 and then had no chance in the quarter-finals against the tournament favorites Uni Malaga (Spain) 0:2. There was also strong competition in the women's beach handball tournament. Here, our women had to settle for two defeats against the University of Budapest (Hungary) and the University of Zagreb (Croatia). The men's beach handball team was able to redeem itself after the opening defeat against the University of Budapest (Hungary) with a win against the University of Kütahya (Turkey) and kept its chance of reaching the quarter-finals. After trailing 0:3 at the break, they came back to 2:3, but were ultimately beaten 3:4. In the end, they finished in 6th place (out of 9 teams). Unfortunately, the men's soccer team missed out on a medal in the bronze medal match. In the penalty shoot-out, they lost by a wafer-thin margin to the University of Debrecen (Hungary). The men's soccer team also suffered a painful defeat. In the semi-final against the University of Würzburg, they were clearly defeated 4:1. Only the women's soccer team had something to celebrate on this day. With a hard-fought 2:1 victory against the University of Trondheim (Norway), they will now play for 5th place. The women's soccer team continued with a 2:1 win against the University of Coimbra (Portugal) in their final group match. The final match was played by the men's soccer team, who fought their way through the quarter-finals with a hard-earned 1:0 victory against the University of Granada (Spain), thus securing their place in the German semi-finals against the University of Würzburg. The women's team showed patience against deep-lying opponents and earned their well-deserved reward. The festive opening ceremony in the DVTK Arena in Miskolc brought a sparkle to the eyes of the participants from the German universities, who had already set sporting highlights. The men's soccer team secured their first three points with a 3:1 win against the University of Salzburg, while the women's soccer team started the tournament with a 1:5 defeat against the French University of Valenciennes.
