  • The Karlsruhe universities once again fielded a male volleyball team at this year's European University Championships (EUG). For the tournament, the team made the long journey to the city of Miskolc in eastern Hungary, where the volleyball competition took place from July 10 - 16. Together with athletes from other countries and sports such as kickboxing, judo and chess, the team was accommodated on the university's attractive campus, where they spent a lot of time away from the competition. With a large "fun zone", a good canteen and the competition venues for the other sports, the venue was a very pleasant place to stay for all athletes.

The team arrived with the sporting ambition of competing at the front of the field for the medals and had a full 14-man squad at its disposal. 12 teams from all over Europe competed in the men's tournament. In the group stage, which was played in four groups of three, the team faced teams from Valencia and Lyon. The clear objective was to finish first in the group in order to start the knockout matches with a good starting position and self-confidence.

In the first game against Valencia, it was important to settle in as a team and live up to the role of favorites. With a solid overall performance, the Karlsruhe team defeated the Spaniards 3:0 and went into the important second group game with a good feeling. However, the team from Uni INSA Lyon was a worthy opponent with strong attackers and a good defense, meaning that the game had to be decided in a tie-break. Here, the team from Karlsruhe used their physical superiority and narrowly prevailed 15:13. As the group winners, they were therefore able to secure their place in the quarter-finals and saved themselves the additional match in the intermediate round.

In the quarter-finals, the team from Karlsruhe then faced the Czech team from the University of Brno. The Karlsruhe team narrowly lost the first two sets 23:25 against the strong Czech team. In the third set, the eventual finalists from Brno were able to assert themselves more clearly and so Karlsruhe had to admit defeat to a better team with 3:0.

In the two placement matches that followed, the first match was against the Slovenian team from the University of Maribor. Here, Karlsruhe won 3:1 in an exhausting match in the midday heat of Hungary.

The second placement match for fifth place was a rematch from the group phase. It was again against Lyon. In this match, however, the tired Karlsruhe team had much more difficulty against the French team. They were unable to gain a foothold in any of the three sets played and were therefore beaten 3:0 in the rematch.

As a result, KIT had to bow out of the competition in Hungary in sixth place. However, this was quickly overcome, as the students from Karlsruhe were able to bid farewell to Hungary in a convivial atmosphere at the Players Party on the last evening. This rounded off a great week in Hungary.
