WG Karlsruhe at DHM 2024 individual fencing in Göttingen

  • This year's individual university championships took place in Göttingen on November 16 and 17.


    Saturday - men's epee, men's sabre, women's foil

    82 fencers competed in the men's epee, including eight from Karlsruhe. András Pásztor was able to convince in the preliminary round with one defeat and otherwise only victories. In the round of the last 16, however, he had to admit defeat to Aurel Vidali from Bonn. As the best Karlsruhe epee fencer, he achieved 14th place. Further placings: Elias Ott (30th), András Bogár (36th), Max Beger (40th), Simon Bender (50th), Maël Doll (56th), Peter Berger (63rd) and Lucas Albrecht (78th).


    Daniel Brommer and Moritz Kahl competed in the men's sabre in a strong field of participants. Moritz Kahl failed in the 32-man knockout, while Daniel Brommer made it to the 16-man knockout, where he was beaten by Simon Thomé from Darmstadt. He finished in a strong 11th place.


    Raphaelia Koiou and Anna Richter competed for Karlsruhe in the women's foil. After a strong preliminary round, both received a bye for the knockout round of 64. In the round of the last 32, however, they had to admit defeat after exciting battles.


    Sunday - men's foil, women's epee, women's sabre

    On the second day of competition, the men's foil, women's epee and women's sabre disciplines were on the program.


    Lucas Albrecht, Simon Bender, Max Berger, Daniel Brommer, Dominik Bühler, Moritz Kahl, András Pásztor and Matthias Wolsfeld competed in the men's foil. All eight fencers made it through the preliminary round. However, Lucas Albrecht, Max Berger, Daniel Brommer and András Pásztor were eliminated early in the incomplete 128-man knockout. Dominik Bühler, Moritz Kahl and Elias Ott reached the 64-man knockout. Simon Bender fought his way through to the top 32, but was beaten by Sweden's Henri Ask.


    Matthias Wolsfeld was the best fencer from Karlsruhe and impressed in the first knockout bouts. In the fight for a place in the round of 16, he narrowly defeated Dirk Riedinger from Mainz by one point after a thrilling duel. He was also defeated in the round of 16 and finished in 13th place.


    In women's épée, 5 fencers competed for Karlsruhe. Raphaelia Koiou was able to put herself in a good starting position for the knockout rounds with a strong preliminary round. She initially came out on top in the elimination rounds. She was only beaten in the round of 16 by Lisa Marie Mielke, who later came third, and therefore finished in 15th place. Further placings: Julia Ehlermann (23rd), Xinzhu Wu (27th), Judith Prüm (28th), and Antonia Weis (45th).


    Raphaelle Chan and Alyn Shao competed for Karlsruhe in the women's sabre fencing. Raphaelle Chan was eliminated in the round of 32, while Alyn Shao fought her way through to the last 16. There she was defeated by the eventual winner Lena Stemper.


    As participation in the DHM was a prerequisite for qualification for the World University Games, the field of participants was very strong with several national squad athletes. The weekend was a complete success for the fencing department of Karlsruhe University Sports. With good individual placings and the highest number of participants of all universities, Karlsruhe presented itself successfully. The department management would like to thank everyone who made this weekend possible.
