Full stands, a great backdrop, loud fan chants, spectacular gymnastics and some surprising winners - the athletes and visitors were treated to all of this at this year's DHM in Karlsruhe.
The Karlsruhe "gymnastics kings", who organized the event, went all out to welcome over 400 athletes from all over Germany.
The men's DHM was won by WG München ahead of WG Köln and last year's winners Stuttgart. The host men from WG Karlsruhe did not finish higher than 5th place, but were quite satisfied with their performances and a total of 4 qualifications for the apparatus finals. Sebastian Bock from the University of Siegen confidently won the individual competition.
Late in the evening, the gymnasts from WG Karlsruhe crowned their home German Championships:
After a flawless competition at a high level, the Karlsruhe queens were able to celebrate the German championship title in front of their home crowd. WG München, who were favorites beforehand, missed out on the triple (after 2016 and 2017), failing to get past the hosts Karlsruhe.
After winning the team competition, local heroine Maike Roll was also delighted with her 3rd place in the individual competition.
The adh Cup started on Saturday at the usual late hour of 6:30 a.m. with the first round of gymnastics. 3 rounds and a total of 33 teams later, but still 1.5 hours ahead of schedule, the winners were determined: WG München managed to be the adh Cup winners in both the men's and women's competitions.
In the men's competition, the gymnasts from Karlsruhe, together with their yellow-clad fan block, loudly celebrated second place.
In the women's adh Cup, the competition with the largest number of participants with 21 universities, the University of Leipzig finished behind the winners from Munich. The bronze medal was fiercely contested, but in the end the University of Wuppertal had the decisive tenths more ahead of Bayreuth (4) and Karlsruhe (5), and was delighted with its podium finish.
The final highlight of the second day of competition was the apparatus finals, in which the best 6 gymnasts of the DHM competed.
Right at the beginning, the hall was loud once again when newcomer Marvin Rauprich - from first semester to first - won the title on floor for Karlsruhe. Karlsruhe's Lazar Bratan and Julius Riedel took 5th and 6th place in the vault final, while all-around winner Sebastian Bock from the University of Siegen completed his medal collection with three golds (high bar, parallel bars, rings) and a silver on the pommel horse. Daniel Morres had also qualified for an apparatus final in Karlsruhe and achieved 4th place with a high-quality routine in the high bar final.
After her all-around victory, Ruby van Dijk collected 3 more medals in the apparatus finals. She won gold on vault, silver on floor and bronze on uneven bars. Maike Roll from Karlsruhe had qualified for 3 apparatus finals. She achieved 4th place on uneven bars, 3rd place on balance beam and 5th place on floor. Newcomer Stella Bruzzo was also able to present her beam routine in the final and finished in 5th place.
The organization team from Karlsruhe is happy about the successful event, especially since it went off almost injury-free. A big thank you goes to all the helpers, judges, paramedics, photographers and to all the hard-working hands who made sure that the equipment was dismantled in record time at the end of the event before everyone went off to celebrate together.
