DHM Indoor Hockey 2018 in Leverkusen
Both the Karlsruhe women's team and the men's team achieved medal places last year, so both teams had high expectations of success.
As the reigning German runners-up, the Karlsruhe women started the tournament with great motivation. Their opponents were Göttingen, Cologne, Wuppertal and Tübingen. After narrowly losing a game against Tübingen (0:1), the girls were well-rehearsed and got into the second game against Wuppertal much better. Despite a very good defensive performance, the girls were unable to score a goal and also lost this game 0:1. The third game against Cologne, some of whom had Bundesliga players in the tournament, was also clearly lost (0:10). The first victory was in the last game of the first day against Göttingen, with a final score of 1:0. As the team from Wuppertal was out of contention due to a shortage of players, the third-place match against Göttingen was played on day two. Here too, the Karlsruhe team were barely able to take advantage of their scoring opportunities and lost 3-2 to Göttingen after an exciting and evenly-matched game, meaning that the Karlsruhe team finished the tournament in fourth place.
The men's team from Karlsruhe came third in the German university championship last year. As there were significantly more men's teams than women's teams entered, the men's tournament was played in a group system. Karlsruhe's opponents were Aachen, Göttingen and Marburg. In the first game against Aachen, the men from the fan-shaped city were defeated 6:2 and the second game against Marburg was narrowly lost 6:5 after leading 1:3. In the third game against the reigning champions Aachen, the Karlsruhe team took an early three-goal lead and eventually won the game 3:4. However, this did not change their fourth place in the group stages. After winning a clear placement match on the second day against the Wuppertal selection, the men of the Karlsruhe floorball team found themselves in 7th place.
Despite a not quite so victorious field hockey weekend for the Karlsruhe university indoor hockey teams, the German Indoor Hockey Championships were a complete success, as even beginners to the sport of field hockey were able to gain valuable playing experience.
