Sabre fencers from Karlsruhe with strong 3rd place at DHM
Team fencing in particular offers those who have not yet discovered this sport for themselves for so long, valuable experience and all fencers a sense of togetherness that comes from cheering along and cheering on the fencer on the planche. The first epee team, consisting of Fabian Lansche, Jens Keller and Matthias Ketterl, mastered the preliminary round sovereignly on Saturday. The team only had to admit defeat to the Freiburg team in the second knockout round and thus achieved a place in the midfield. The second epee team, whose fencers only took up the sport while studying at KIT, were not out of place at this high-class tournament, but had few chances to win against the experienced competition. They made it to a good 19th place out of 20.
The saber team was able to shine in the preliminary round. They won two out of three team fencing and were seeded fourth for the first knockout round. With the team from Kiel, the sabre fencers delivered a very exciting and balanced fencing for the entry into the semifinals. Erich Bretnütz, Steffen Ehrle and the final fencer Felix Ehrler kept their nerves, set their hits and thus secured bronze.
The foil team of Manuel Baptista, Jens Keller and Philipp Weimann got a bye for the first knockout round on Sunday after a strong preliminary round and only had to admit defeat in the round of the best eight by squad fencers (and the later winners) from Tauberbischofsheim. They thus achieved a successful 7th place.
Despite the sweltering heat, it was a very successful DHM weekend and we are already looking forward to the next, then hopefully somewhat cooler DHM in November!
