DHM Fencing in Heidelberg
The Center for University Sports at Heidelberg University, together with TSG Rohrbach, hosted the German University Championships in fencing (individual) from December 14 to 16. The modern gymnasiums of Heidelberg University provided an excellent environment. With around 400 starters over two days in the weapons foil, epee and sabre, it was one of the largest fencing tournaments in Germany in 2012.
Ranking points were awarded in this tournament, which help decide the qualification for the Universiade 2013 (Olympiad of University Sports) in Kazan/Russia. Accordingly, there was a large number of national squad athletes from the Olympic bases who wanted to get a starting place for the Universiade and fought out the first places among themselves.
Both foil and epee and sabre fencers from the KIT University Sports took part in the tournament. Our fencers André Németh (epee), Alexey Mokin (epee), Patrick Heim (epee), Hoang Vu (foil), Jens Keller (foil), Kai Helms (foil) and Yaokun Zhang (sabre) were placed behind, but could gain a lot of experience and competition practice on the highest level. In the middle field Christopher Stoerrle (epee), from the good old Heidenheim school, as well as Andreas Froelich (sabre) delivered respectable performances.
The surprise from KIT's point of view, however, was our fencer Boi Vi Truong (sabre). As the only lady from KIT, she was able to reach a place on the podium at her first tournament participation ever. With her third place in the women's sabre she collected her first ranking points.
