Split 2013, European Championship diary: Entry 6
After the deserved defeat against the Croatian hosts, our team had to face Sporthochschule Köln in the semi-finals of the placement round.
At the start of the game, the opponents from the cathedral city were more focused and quickly led by up to 25 points in the first quarter. As the game progressed, our boys got into their stride and were able to reduce the deficit to 5 points in the third quarter. However, slight mistakes allowed our opponents to pull away again to 19 points and we deservedly lost the game 60:79.
In the game for 7th place on Sunday, the KIT team faced the University of Vienna.
Our boys were much more alert in the first quarter and quickly led 11:8. However, the good start proved to be a flash in the pan. The Austrians got into the game better and better and led 23:13 at the end of the first quarter.
Our boys were unable to reduce the gap in the second period and even went into half-time trailing 34:52.
It was also noticeable in the third quarter: After the great fight in the semi-final against Croatia, our boys had simply run out of steam. They tried everything to get back into the game... but the Viennese took a 12-point lead into the final quarter.
In the last 10 minutes of the tournament, our boys had to let the Austrians pass them time and time again after the intense games of the week, fought in an exemplary manner, but in the end had to accept a deserved 83:103 defeat.
Head of the delegation Dr. Dietmar Blicker and coach Uli Himstedt answer questions in the post-match interview.
After the game, the delegation visited the women's final (Bochum unfortunately lost after a great fight against the strong girls from Belgrade) and the men's final (Split won against the University of Istanbul with 70:43). After a nice award ceremony and the corresponding closing party, we will travel back to Germany on Monday.
In summary, the European Student Championship in Split was a great experience for everyone involved and we were very satisfied with the sporting performance shown. The matches were also a great preparation for the season for the many KIT SC Gequos players in the team.
After all, they were one of the best university teams in Europe this year and can go home with their heads held high after finishing 8th in this tournament.
As always, you can find the impressions from the last entry in the picture gallery... Matches against Cologne and Vienna and the finals!
The sport.kit team says goodbye to Croatia and wishes all sports and basketball fans a great summer.
