DHM Badminton 2013: Podium for KIT Athletes
The newcomer from Karlsruhe, which presented itself well in its own hall, had to deal with the defending champion from Saarland University in the semifinals. Stephanie Romen (Karlsruhe) won the women's doubles with Dorothee Schumacher (Karlsruhe) as well as the mixed with Lucas Bednorsch. In addition, D.Schumacher added a winning point in the women's singles. Also the first men's singles between L.Bednorsch (Karlsruhe) and H.Käsbauer (Saarbruecken) was open for a long time until at the end the 1.Liga player H.Käsbauer prevailed in the third set. All other games were won by the Saarland University, which won the match 5:3.
The second semi-final was Uni Duisburg-Essen against WG Berlin. In the end, Uni Duisburg-Essen won 4:3 (both teams played with only one woman, so the women's doubles were omitted). So the final was a meeting of the two teams that already represented Germany in May at the European University Championships. The University of the Saarland, studded with squad athletes, prevailed in the end with 5:3 and thus celebrated the third title hat-trick.
In the small final between WG Karlsruhe and WG Berlin, neither team wanted to take the ungrateful fourth place. Four of the eight matches went the full distance of three sets. Especially the first men's doubles, which L.Bednorsch/Lukas Förschner (Karlsruhe) won in the third set with 26:24, could hardly be surpassed in tension. L.Bednorsch and Jonas Benz-Baldas (Karlsruhe) prevailed in their singles in two sets. So it was left to S.Romen to get the 5th and decisive victory point in the women's singles, since the women's doubles had already been won without a fight.
Also in the last match of the day between Marcus Bayer (Karlsruhe) and Philipp Salow (Berlin) no chance was left unused, before the Berliner prevailed in the third set. The second men's doubles with Konstantin Kron/J.Benz-Baldas and the mixed K.Kron/D.Schumacher unfortunately had to be left to the students from the capital after a long fight. Finally the WG Karlsruhe celebrated a 5:3 victory and could be happy about a medal at the DHM at their first participation.
The spectators were offered great games and all participants are already looking forward to the DHM next year, then hopefully again together with the individual championship!
